Bale has another two years on his contract with Real, who seem desperate to offload him. Reports this week suggested the Spanish champions will pay half of Bale’s £600,000-a-week wage if someone takes him.

Manchester United target Sergio Reguilon is favouring a return to Sevilla over a move to the Red Devils this summer, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have hit a roadblock in their pursuit of left back Reguilon with Real Madrid reportedly insistent on a £27million buy-back clause.

The likes of Troy Deeney, Danny Welbeck, Ismaila Sarr and Will Hughes were among a raft of players absent here through a combination of injury, lack of match fitness or simply sitting in the departure lounge waiting for a move before the window shuts next month.

United start their Premier League campaign next Saturday against Crystal Palace and Solskjaer was buoyed by the performances of Van de Beek, who signed from Ajax, and Henderson, fresh from his loan spell at Sheffield United.

It’s early days of course and the remaining weeks of the transfer window will bring further upheaval, but Watford proved just about superior to a Middlesbrough team who you sense would be more than content with mid-table anonymity.

West Brom have already signed five players — Matheus Pereira, Grady Diangana, Callum Robinson, Cedric Kipre and David Button — in the close-season since earning promotion back to the Premier League after a two-year absence.

Yet despite his good form, Reguilon is not in Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane’s first-team plans and though United are keen on a £27m move, Solskjaer and the United board do not want to include a buy-back clause.

Sept 11 (Reuters) – Newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion have unfinished business in the transfer market as they aim to buy more players but are struggling to get further deals over the line due to a lack of funds, manager Slaven Bilic said on Friday.

Watford were the more vibrant side before half-time before retreating after the break.

Middlesbrough saw chances come and go, with Britt Assombalonga their most dangerous player, but Watford showed a resoluteness often missing last season.

He added: ‘At other clubs, they would be building a statue outside the ground to celebrate him but he has been treated with disrespect by Real Madrid for a long time now and clearly he needs to find a way to get out of there because he has not played enough football in recent months.’

“We are doing everything to be creative but it’s not easy to be creative without the proper funds for the players we are talking about,” Bilic told a news conference ahead of Sunday’s season opener at home to Leicester City.
